Founders Brewing Co. was started in 1997 by Mike Stevens and Dave Engbers, two college friends who quit their day jobs and nearly went bankrupt brewing safe, forgettable beer. The turnaround came when they decided to brew what they actually wanted to drink — complex, in-your-face ales — and beers like Dirty Bastard, Breakfast Stout, and All Day IPA turned the Grand Rapids taproom into a destination.
Our History
We ended up here by accident on a road trip when a detour closed the highway, and it became the best wrong turn we ever took. We still argue about who ordered the Breakfast Stout first, but we agree the coaster was fairly won in a game of euchre with two strangers at the long table.
